Some impressions of the day:
OUR LATEST ACTIVITIES
On Friday, June 8th, 2018, we celebrated the graduation of the 13th class of EBLI's program "Young Mothers Computer Literacy" at National Lodge, Mwanza. Over 50 young women and men studied computer knowldege during the first half of the year 2018 and also learned business skills to get successfully into business. It was a great pleasure for all of us - students, families, friends and staff members of EBLI - to celebrate together this special day. There were shows, drama, speeches and dances and songs we've all enjoyed. But as Mr. Bernard Makachia, EBLI's Executive Director, pointed out in his speech, this day shall just be the start into a successful future, and there are new things to learn everyday. To be grateful for getting knowledge may please us, but we will be really happy, seeing each of the former students living an independent life of his/her choice. Some impressions of the day:

In 2016, EBLI started it's Secondary Education program as a pilot project for vulnerable youth, dropped out of school. Michael Leen was from the beginning involved in creating, planning and realizing this program. In May 2017, Michael left Mwanza and returned with his family to the USA. But also from far away, Michael is still supporting the Secondary Education program in many ways, and it's also due to him, that the program can be continued after the pilot phase.
Today, Michael visited EBLI and the students who started the program in January 2017, have for sure not forgotten him and were so happy to see Michael again! Everybody at EBLI is grateful for everything, Michael is still doing for us and we thank him for visiting us in Mwanza. What a great surprise for all staff members of EBLI today: Michael Leen just stepped into EBLI's weekly staff meeting. It is already a year ago, since Michael Leen has left Mwanza and returned to the USA, together with his wife Ashley and their daughter Fiona. Michael was working together with the EBLI-team for 3,5 years, improved administrative tasks like Monitoring and Evaluation, wrote manuals in Kiswahili for several programs and taught EBLI's staff members in various skills and supported especially young mothers by teaching them business skills.
We really do miss Michael as our co-worker but are so happy to have him back for a week! Today is an important day in many young women's and men's life: the interview for the admission for the next classes of Computer Literacy Training is taking place at EBLI. After completing the admission form, EBLI's Executive Director, Bernard Makachia, figures out, if the applicants fit in the program and should be able, to follow the curriculum. Between 50 and 60 of them will start EBLI's Computer Literacy Training on Monday, May 21st.
Yesterday and today EBLI conducted a workshop on Gender Based Violence (GBV) to a group of 35 community leaders in an effort to stem the rising incidences of violence within the community. Some of the topics covered include the definition of gender based violence, the factors that perpetuate GBV, what needs to be done to eradicate this issue as well as individual interventions to bring about behavior change.
The workshop was facilitated by EBLI's Executive Director, Mr. Bernard Makachia. Remember to turn on your radio! Every Friday morning, EBLI is addressing gender based issues and discusses young women's and young men's questions with experts and youth live on radio Metro FM Mwanza, FM 99.3.
EBLI celebrates all women and in particular these students who are pursuing their educational dreams at EBLI.
EBLI is teaching lessons in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender Based Violence (GBV) in 10 secondary schools in Mwanza. But today, Andrew Mwakibolwa and Elizabeth Geofrey teach the students from our own Secondary Education program (QT). In role plays, group discussions and with demonstrations, the students learn about family planning, disease prevention and behavior change - in an open and free atmosphere, where all questions can be asked and where are no taboos.
The results of the National Examination in Secondary Education, held in November 2017, are out. We are incredibly happy and proud to announce, that 67% of EBLI's students who went to the exams passed successfully. It was the first class of EBLI's students who did the National Examination. They will receive their Certificates of Secondary Education, which allow them to study or to get employed. What a great step in each student's life. They were dropped out of school, already facing a life in poverty and difficulties. But they all gave their best, worked hard and did not give up - living their vision of a better life for themselves and their children.
Every Friday, EBLI is life on air on radio Metro FM Mwanza, FM 99.3. Issues of young people are articulated and discussed with the listeners. Today, the youth officer from Ilemela Municipal Council answered listeners questions on the challenges facing young people in development. He was assisted by Elizabeth and Mary from EBLI's SRHR department.
